| DescriptionThe English Toy Spaniel is a small, sturdy, square spaniel with a deep,
pug nose that is black with very well open nostrils, a well-defined
stop, and dome-shaped skull. The teeth should be slightly undershot.
The round eyes are large, and dark with a sweet expression. The long
feathered ears are pendant and hang along its cheeks. The soft, silky
coat is well feathered and comes in four colors varieties: King Charles
(black & tan), Ruby (solid red, sometimes with a few white hairs or
small white patch on the chest), Blenheim (white with red markings,
often with a red "thumb print" centered on the top of the head), and
Prince Charles (tri-color: white with black & tan markings). The tail
is customarily docked.
OriginThe English Toy Spaniel's origins probably trace back to Asian spaniels
and perhaps the Pug, however the breed was primarily developed in the
British Isles. This loving companion dog became a darling of the
British royalty. One type of English Toy Spaniel, the King Charles
Spaniel, is named for King Charles II of England who owned quite a few
of these charming little "comforter" dogs. During the nineteenth
century, the English Toy Spaniel underwent several changes. He was bred
smaller, with flattened, upturned face, protruding eyes, and a more
rounded skull. The result is today's English Toy Spaniel. The somewhat
similar Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is based on the pre-nineteenth
century Toy Spaniel.
TemperamentThe English Toy Spaniel is gentle, happy, playful, loving and sweet,
but it is sometimes timid. It will be sociable with those who approach
it affectionately. The breed is naturally well-behaved and intelligent,
but is a bit willful. It's quiet, non-demanding, and needs to be
treated gently. They are friendly with other dogs. The English Toy
Spaniel needs to be with a lot of people. They are usually good with
all children, but will do best with an older child. It is an average
barker, and is an okay watchdog. They are, however, considered
exclusively a companion dog. Some are known to be picky eaters.
HeightHeight: about 10 inches (25cm.)
WeightWeight: 9-12 pounds (4.1-5.4kg.)
Known Health ProblemsSome bloodlines are prone to respiratory ailments, heart disease (MVD),
slipped stifle, eye problems and ear infections. The eyes and ears
should be cleaned to avoid some of these problems. Like many other
short-faced breeds, the English Toy Spaniel may wheeze and snore. He
may have trouble breathing in hot weather or with over-exertion,
because of its short muzzle.
Conditions for LivingEnglish Toy Spaniels should be protected from extreme temperatures. It
is good for apartment life, relatively inactive indoors, and will do
okay without a yard.
Exercise Requirmentstheir exercise needs, however, as with all breeds, play will not
fulfill their primal instinct to walk. Dogs who do not get to go on
daily walks are more likely to display a wide array of behavior
problems. They will also enjoy a good romp in a safe open area off
lead, such as a large fenced in yard. Don't think that just because he
is small he should be confined to a small space.
Life ExpectancyAbout 10-12 years.
GroomingThey are average shedders. No trimming or stripping is needed. Regular
brushing will due.
